Graphene OS on Google Fi Pixel 7 Pro
Trying privacy focused phone operating system while living the Google life
Having a backup phone for work, I decided to migrate my existing Google Pixel 7 Pro on Google Fi over to Graphene OS. The process itself was simple - I was able to use the GrapheneOS Web installer and it walked me through the required steps without issue.
Since I utilize Google Fi as my Pixel's carrier, it wasn't clear to me whether GrapheneOS would work as expected.
I'm using the slow-bleed method of de-googling myself: substantially reducing Google's tentacles within my phone is the starting point.
Thus far, this is what I've come up with:
- Google Play Services via Graphene App Store is required
- Google Fi app from Google is required from the Google Play Store
- GrapheneOS sha256 hash shown when device is restarted
- Google Messages for Fi (web) doesn't work
I used the following permissions for Google Play Services: Contacts, Network, Phone, Photos and videos, Sensors, and SMS. This allowed me to utilize my existing Google contacts in addition to making and taking calls/texts.
I also installed the F-Droid App Store and aside from some Google and other brand-specific apps (Southwest, Marriott) I have stayed out of the Google Play Store so far.
I will likely break down for Google Maps and YouTube/YouTube Music in the near future.
But as a starting point, I've been very happy with GrapheneOS and hope to continue using it as my daily driver moving forward.
